Polmeere Road, Penzance Engineering Works

Mining specialists have been carrying out ground investigations alongside specialist structural engineers.
In recent weeks mining specialists have been carrying out ground investigations alongside specialist structural engineers in order to fully understand the extent of the essential remedial work required to reopen the highway.
Extensive sampling and testing has taken place to confirm the site specific rock and soil conditions that are critical to the structural stability of the repairs.
This feature differs from a simple mine shaft remediation which could be simply ‘plugged’ or ‘capped’, due to the presence of water, and the existence of connecting adits and mine related drainage tunnels.
It is therefore not possible to specify a simple ‘plug’ or ‘cap’ in this instance, as blocking the system would likely result in significant flooding issues elsewhere as a direct consequence.
The design solution at Polmeere Road will comprise of a load bearing structural slab, in essence constructing a subsurface reinforced concrete bridge to span the void to support the highway and surrounding land.
The road closure will remain in place 24/7 so that we can maintain a safe environment for road users and our teams. As the scheme may impact travel to surrounding areas, we would urge road users to allow extra time for their journey. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
