A391
PROJECT UPDATE - 29 May
We are pleased to announce that we are nearing the completion of the A391 road resurfacing project. Our teams will be working overnight to finalise the enhancements on the Scredda roundabout, which will be reopened by 8 am tomorrow (30 May).
Assuming there are no unexpected weather issues or equipment breakdowns, and subject to our final safety checks, we anticipate fully reopening the A391 north east distributor road in the afternoon on Saturday 31 May.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during the delivery of this important project, which will ensure safer and more efficient journeys for our local communities.
UPDATE ON WORK AT SCREDDA ROUNDABOUT - 28 May
The work at Scredda roundabout has been delayed due to heavy rain and unfavourable weather conditions yesterday. As a result, the schedule has been pushed back by one day.
Revised key dates:
28 and 29 May: The roundabout will be closed for 24 hours; however, access to St Austell Enterprise Park will be maintained.
Please note, before we can safely reopen the roundabout, we need to allow sufficient time for the materials to cure, as well as time to complete the laying of road markings and final work on the approaches. Our priority remains to reopen Scredda as quickly as possible on 30 May.
We are actively monitoring the weather conditions and appreciate your continued support.
PROJECT UPDATE - 16 May
The project remains on schedule for completion on 30 May and continues to progress well.
In the coming week, our attention will turn to resurfacing the roundabouts, beginning with the Bethel roundabout, and moving north towards Scredda.
We understand that some sections of the carriageway may appear complete, leading to questions about why they cannot be opened one at a time. However, we wish to emphasise that opening sections individually would create a single point for diverting traffic from the A391. This could result in vehicles travelling on routes not designed to accommodated such traffic, compromising road users' safety. Therefore, the road must remain closed until the project is fully completed.
Additionally, before we can safely reopen the carriageway, we must complete all necessary lining and stud work, which will be carried out in a coordinated effort towards the end of the project.
Please note that three-way traffic lights will operate overnight on the Scredda roundabout on the 22 and 23 May to allow us to remove the road surface. On 27 and 28 May the roundabout will be closed and access will only be maintained for traffic entering and exiting the St Austell Enterprise Park. More information is available here.
PROJECT UPDATE - 9 May
Firstly, we are pleased to report that the project is going well and running to schedule.
By the end of this week, we will have removed 4,000 tonnes of surface course material, carried out all the structural repairs to the lower layers of the carriageway, repaired and adjusted all the gullies and drainage features, and painted all the roundabout chevron paving. This is in readiness for the relaying of the surface course, which will start on Monday next week.
To facilitate localised traffic movements, we initially planned to keep the Carclaze, Boscoppa, and Bethel roundabouts open between 7 am and 7 pm during the first phase of the project. However, due to safety concerns arising from six separate vehicle incursions into the work site, it was necessary to close these roundabouts fully until the project is completed. We recognise that this may cause inconvenience, but our top priority is the safety of our workforce and all road users.
We are closely monitoring traffic flows in and around St Austell via driven survey and connected vehicle technology in addition to public feedback. We will continue to monitor and adapt complementary measures to the closure as required.
Please be assured we working to ensure that this project finishes safely and efficiently, ultimately improving the road network for everyone.
Live Labs 2 Project
Beginning on Tuesday 6 May, we will commence resurfacing work on the A391, with the project expected to take four weeks to complete. During this time, a road closure will be in effect to ensure the safety of both our team and local road users.
The Live Labs 2 Project is a highway maintenance and improvement programme funded by the Department for Transport, enabling Cornwall Council to explore modern materials and methods that reduce carbon in road maintenance operations.
We are committed to informing the community and encourage you to return to this page for updates once the project goes live.
